Eula Biss, Notes from No Man's Land, Fitzcarraldo Editions 2017. On page 20 : A black man was hanged from a telephone pole in Belleville, Illinois, where a fire was set at the base of the pole and the man was cut down half alive, covered with coal oil, and burned. While his body was burning the mob beat it with clubs and cut it to pieces.
Beneath the Eula Biss volume another Fitzcarraldo edition, Annie Ernaux, Shame, this one published in 2023. On page 20 : I have found further material evidence dating from that year: a postcard with a black-and-white photograph of Elizabeth II. It was given to me by the daughter of a couple living in Le Havre.
Beneath Annie Ernaux a Guy Rombouts volume, EN, published by het Balanseer in 2021.
Then, deeper down the stack, Thinking Photography, edited by Victor Burgin, open on page 148 and page 149, both pages covered with greyish oil drips, the page to the right, page 149, one of the pages with a black-and-white photograph, shows a picture by James Jarché, Figure 6.1, General Wavell watches his gardener at work, 1941. That gardener is a black man.
In front, declining to the left bottom corner, the cover on top of the lower stack is that of A Trip to Italy, an edition with black-and-white photographs by Sigurd Lewerentz.
Beneath Lewerentz, invisible, an Oswald Wiener volume published in 1979 by Matthes & Seitz : Wir möchten auch vom Arno-Schmidt-Jahr profitieren.
Further down that stack, the one in front, partly hidden a volume by Mirte Vieren, Zen in the Art of Archery by Eugen Herrigel, two postcards, as invisible as the Oswald Wiener book, one by Colette Broeckaert entitled Ondertussen in het zuiden, the other one by Jan-Willem Verherbrugge, as well as Fragments and Pas de deux, both volumes by Sébastien Conard. Hidden beneath Zen in the Art of Archery something on Delacroix and finally, deep down under, a SKIRA volume with a large selection of Camille Corot works.
The whole scenery, some unmentioned volumes as well, is located on a black leather seat.
